Coach Hopkins Retiring
After eighteen years at Walhalla Middle School, Coach Phil Hopkins is retiring. He began teaching physical education and health, coaching the boys’ basketball team, and serving as the athletic director in 2000. After two years, he began coaching the girls’ basketball team as well. Of the thirty-four teams he coached, he won fourteen region championships and had seven undefeated teams.

Coach Hopkins began his career teaching and coaching at Wren High School in 1973; he compiled a record of 165-74 at Wren before moving to the college level. He was an assistant coach for thirteen years at Middle Tennessee State, Radford, Wyoming, Indiana State, and Western Carolina. In 1995 he was hired as the head coach at Western Carolina where he remained for five years. In 1996 the Catamounts won the Southern Conference and nearly defeated Purdue in the NCAA Tournament as a sixteen seed. In 2000 Coach Hopkins continued his passion for basketball and built an elite program at Walhalla Middle School.

Dan Holman will coach both teams this coming year, and Evan Small will teach physical education and serve as athletic director. Coach Hopkins plans to move to Richmond, Virginia and become a full-time “Hoppa” to his seven grandchildren.
